The primary goal of the
Alaska Educational Innovations Network is to build stronger teaching and learning communities within and across the eight partner districts (Anchorage, Mat-Su, Kashunamiut, Lower Kuskokwim, Yupiit, Kodiak, Lake and Pen, Pribilofs); the College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, Kenai Peninsula College, Kodiak College and Mat-Su College; with the support of our other partners General Communications Inc., Following the Leaders, Anchorage Educational Association, and the National Education Association-Alaska.
The foundation of AEIN is the knowledge that all partners have expertise, as well as areas for growth. The network is designed to harness these strengths so that each partner entity both shares and gains expertise. In this way each partner builds and strengthens their local capacity for on-going, standards-based educational renewal. Working together Network partners will develop innovative, cost-effective ways to enhance teaching and learning to ensure that every child is taught by a highly qualified, effective teacher within a supportive, culturally responsive school climate; thereby improving student learning and achievement. The framework for building the network includes:
- Recruiting and supporting the development of a cohort of Network Schools committed to developing themselves as Culturally Responsive Schools.
- Establishing Network-based "Communities of Practice" that link K-12 teacher, principals, district personnel, and university faculty together to draw on each other's expertise, provide on-going and interactive support for innovation and implementation, and to disseminate local successes within the network and to others in the state.
- Providing state-of-the-art, multi-modal, technology-supported preservice teacher education programs and on-going professional development opportunities for teachers and principals-including a network-based induction and mentoring program-to ensure access and opportunity for teachers and potential teachers form Chevak to Kodiak.
- Recruiting, supporting, and sustaining teachers from traditionally under represented groups, especially Alaska Natives.
