Speech, Language, and Auditory Pathology

University of Alaska Anchorage is working together with East Carolina University (ECU) to provide preparatory course work by distance education to candidates who want to become fully qualified speech-language pathologists. Alaskan candidates who do not have an undergraduate degree in Speech-Language Pathology can take our leveling courses and meet prerequisite requirements with our partner university.  ECU has reserved spots in their M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders program for Alaskan students who complete their required prerequisites and meet admission requirements. Non-Alaskans are also welcome to take our leveling courses. These are core courses most graduate programs require for candidates who have an out of field undergraduate degree.  A Bachelor's Degree is required to enroll in the leveling courses.

A Pre-Screening Form is available for candidates who are interested in being included in the leveling courses.  Candidates must submit the pre-screening form along with a copy of their transcript showing they received a Bachelor's Degree.

Leveling courses offered online by UAA:

  • Phonetics
  • Language Development
  • Articulation and Phonology (Phonetics is a prerequisite for this course ~ if you have not taken Phonetics at UAA you must provide a copy of an unofficial transcript as documentation of completion of this course elsewhere.  If you do not submit documentation an instructor initiated withdrawal will be conducted.)
  • Audiology
  • Aural Rehabilitation
  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism
  • Bioacoustics

There is no formal admission process to the UAA offered prerequisite courses, however candidates must have and show evidence of a Bachelor's Degree. Candidates may take as many or as few of these courses as they wish. See ECU information documents for prerequisite requirements.

Alaskan residents will be referred to one of UAA’s partner university. Other candidates who successfully complete core courses may apply to a graduate program at a university of their choice. UAA will be happy to advise candidates on graduate programs available in the lower 48.

BEFORE YOU CAN BEGIN AN INTERNSHIP
  • Unless you are currently certificated in Alaska, candidates must submit a statement to the College of Education Office of Clinical Services and Certification as part of the application to the internship (EDSE A614S or EDSE A620S):
  • setting out the history of any criminal convictions in Alaska and/or other states in which they have lived (juvenile crime records that have been sealed by the court need not be disclosed)
  • all names by which they have been known
  • all states in which they have lived
  • Candidates who are certificated teachers must submit a copy of a current Alaska Teacher Certificate prior to admission the an internship.
  • Candidates who are not currently certificated in Alaska must receive authorization from EED (State of Alaska Education and Early Development Department,  http://www.eed.state.ak.us/) to participate in an internship.  Internship applicants must apply for EED 'student teacher' authorization as part of the internship application process.  This application process requires fingerprinting/criminal history background check, which must be initiated about 5 months prior to the first day of fieldwork.  If the background check is not initiated in time for the processing to occur before the first day of fieldwork, the Office of Clinical Services and Teacher Certification may deny the request for the internship.
  • Failure to comply with the criminal history background requirements, falsification of information, or evidence of a criminal conviction that would preclude State certification will result in denial of access to or removal from field placement settings and programs that lead to State certification.  In addition, conviction of a crime involving moral turpitude may result in denial of access to or removal from field placement settings and programs that lead to State certification.  Refer to the UAA College of Education Student Criminal History Background Check Policies and Procedures.
